Simple Yet Effective Healthy Living Tips For Baby Boomers
Those who are nearing retirement will need to pay more attention to their health than they did in years past. Thankfully, living a healthy lifestyle is not overly complicated, although it does take some effort and self-discipline. Following are some simple yet very effective healthy living tips that a person who is getting on in years will want to put into practice.
Eat Right
Eating the right foods is imperative. A good diet for a person who is getting older includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods such as brown bread, brown rice and potatoes and calcium rich foods such as unsweetened yogurt and whole milk.
Those who are concerned about their weight will want to cut back on eating red meat and instead eat low fat, protein rich white meats such as chicken, turkey and fish. Beans are also an excellent source of protein, as is tofu.
Drink Right
A person should drink at least eight cups of water a day in order to flush toxins out of the body and avoid dehydration. Green tea is also good and contains many minerals the body needs in order to stay looking young. It also provides an energy boost.
Exercise
Getting daily exercise is a must. A person should identify the type of exercise he or she feels comfortable doing and then make time for exercise every single day. Low impact exercises are often best for those who are getting older and some of the many good options to choose from include walking, biking, swimming or using suitable gym equipment such as a treadmill or elliptical.
Getting Enough Sleep
It is also very important to get enough sleep. The body needs the down time to not only feel refreshed and energetic but also to boost the immune system so that it can fight off sickness and disease. Those who find it difficult to sleep at night should find natural ways to calm the body down before it is time to go to bed. Some ways to go about this include avoiding intense movies, TV shows or books right before bedtime, drinking warm milk with honey before going to bed and playing relaxing music.
Staying Engaged
A person who is engaged will have the motivation needed to stay healthy; those who are bored with life in general often suffer from conditions such as depression and a weak immune system. Every baby boomer should have at least one hobby and make time to see friends and family members on a very regular basis. Learning a new skill is also a good way to stay mentally alert.
Healthy living will help a senior citizen live longer and have a more enjoyable life than he or she would otherwise. Eating right, drinking the right liquids, getting sufficient yet age appropriate exercise, getting enough sleep every night and staying mentally alert and engaged will help to reduce the possibility of having to deal with serious health problems and will enable a person to stay happy and healthy as he or she gets on in years.
